Many students will become overwhelmed with the complexity of a particular task. Tasks are sometimes very complex because they have students perform a variety of sub tasks. In these situations, students can have an easier time handling complexity when they have the task divided into multiple sub-tasks. For example, if a student must write an introduction, the teacher might have the student only work on writing a sentence designed to grab the reader’s attention.

Some students simply need more time in order to master certain concepts. Instructors should try to find as many opportunities as possible to help students to obtain extra help. Parents can help their children further by working with them at home or hiring a tutor.

In some cases, the student might feel anxiety over the work required and might feel that he or she will not be able to manage the workload. Under these circumstances, the teacher or parent could tell the child that all he or she needs to do is complete a single task within a particular time frame. This might help the student get a sense of how much time he or she has to complete the task. It is also helpful to have the student engage in relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, to help the student overcome feelings of anxiety.

One of the main obstacles when helping children learn how to successfully complete tasks is to help them develop a sense of self-efficacy, which is when the child feels that he or she is able to successfully complete tasks. Giving children easier tasks can help them build up their confidence so that they can build up confidence that is necessary to perform more difficult tasks in the future.

Some students simply need to be moved into a different class. The teacher might not have a teaching style that is not compatible with the student or the other students in the class might be much higher achievers. If the other students are high-achievers, the struggling student can have a difficult time developing the self-efficacy that is necessary to put in the effort that is required to master learning concepts.

Since students will inevitably have different levels of skill and different learning styles, instructors should always try to implement differentiated instruction methods whenever possible to ensure that all students are reached. This ensures that each student is able to learn at the level and in the way that the student is willing and able to learn. This ensures that the instructor is able to maximize the amount of learning that occurs in the classroom.

Ask the average applicant to graduate school in psychology and they will likely recite GPA and GRE scores as the top admissions criteria. They have intentionally spent many hours studying for their classes to achieve an excellent grade point average. It may seem like you have a slim chance of getting into graduate school without a top GPA from the outside looking in, but that is not the truth. If you indeed have a less-than-stellar GPA, you can still fulfill your dreams of earning a graduate degree in psychology. Here are some strategies to achieve a well-rounded graduate application package without graduating magna or summa cum laude.

1. Is your GPA as “subpar” as you might think?
This might seem like a silly question, but plenty of applicants obsess over their GPA as if it is the sole “make or break” criteria to get into psychology graduate programs. The reality is that it is not. If you have a GPA in the 3.0-3.5 range, you can STILL earn an acceptance letter to grad school – no matter what published statistics say on university websites. Even if your GPA is in the low 2.0-range, it is still possible for you to go onto advanced study in psychology.

2. Is your grade point average substantially higher in your major?
Take a quick inventory of your transcript. It is becoming more popular for graduate school applications to ask for your overall GPA and then your GPA in your major. Most applicants don’t necessarily realize it, but if you calculate your average GPA in your major, you may very well have a high GPA where it matters most. Even if you grad school application doesn’t ask for overall GPA in your major, if you can demonstrate a higher GPA it makes sense to bring this to the attention of the graduate admissions committee.

3. Do you have an explanation for your low grades?
Did you not take your classes as seriously as you should have Freshman or Sophomore year? Did goofing off lower your GPA, but you were able to bounce back with a substantially higher GPA in your latter college years? If so, mention “your story” as an overall theme for your personal statement. Being able to boast a higher GPA during your Junior or Senior years (and presenting a convincing argument for why this makes you an ideal candidate) may be your ticket to get into graduate school.

4. Is your graduate application package well-rounded?
Ask a graduate admissions committee member and they will tell you that GPA isn’t everything. It may not even be the most important factor in admissions decisions. If you have a subpar GPA, you will want to balance this with great GRE scores, lots of practical or research experience, a thoughtful and well-written personal statement, and exemplary letters of recommendation.

You may want to strongly consider applying for master’s degree programs rather than Ph.D. programs. Usually doctorate programs admit those “superstar” students who have near perfect GPAs and GRE scores. Instead, master’s degree programs typically have more lenient admissions criteria than Ph.D. programs. Successfully gaining admission to a master’s degree program allows you to “start the clock over” and post a brand new grade point average. For many students it is a second chance to solidify chances of getting into psychology Ph.D. programs.

Did you know that less than 10% of applicants get into the graduate school of their choice? Personal statement writing is your chance to stand out from other applicants! Visit Doctorate Degree Psychology for more tips and strategies on how to get into grad school!

How Will My Career Benefit From Attending Grad School? Grad school? Why go to grad school? Is it not enough that you have graduated with a bachelor’s degree? How will your career benefit from attending grad school? If you really have questions about why grad school is for you, this article will help you understand. One good thing about attending grad school is that upon graduation, a certain amount of prestige will be attached to anyone that has accomplished such an amazing accomplishment.

Degree holders are seen as both intelligent and accomplished that gives you a leg up on the competition when it comes to looking for a job or that elusive promotion. Degrees give you a better eligibility for work since acquiring those titles would mean intense experience that nobody would give a second thought about your repertoire as a hard working person. More companies would look for someone intelligent and hard working and oftentimes degrees can deliver that message on your resume. And of course, going to grad school can create better job opportunities than those who did not attend grad school. There are more jobs that require people with graduate school degree and finishing grad school puts you in this category.

Companies often find people with grad school degrees to be far more competent and eligible for higher positions than those who are not. Therefore, the opportunities for people who have gone to grad school are oftentimes better than those who did not take this opportunity.

Yale Law School is continuing its two-decade run atop U.S. News’s rankings of Best Law Schools. Little else changed among the top schools, as Harvard Law School, Stanford Law School, Columbia Law School, and the University of Chicago Law School round out the top five, in order, for the second consecutive year.
Click here to find out more!

A new school has cracked the top 14, otherwise known as the “T14″ in the legal community. The top 14 is not an official subset of rankings, but has continued to contain the same 14 schools, in varying order, since 1990, when the first set of law school rankings based upon a comprehensive methodology were introduced. Schools in the T14 tend to be held in the highest regard by law firms and within the law school community. This year, the University of Texas—Austin School of Law tied the Georgetown Law Center for the 14th spot—both earning a total score of 77. The remainder of the T14 schools all attained an overall score of 80 or more.

While Texas’s jump carries significance when viewed through a historical lens, the school only rose one spot from 2011 when it tied for 15th with the University of California—Los Angeles School of Law, and other schools made larger jumps in rank overall. The University of Maryland School of Law, for instance, jumped from 48th last year to 42nd this year and was among the biggest movers of the top 50 schools. The University of California—Davis School of Law also made a significant leap, moving from 28th overall to 23rd.

With environmental and healthcare issues making headlines and staying on the forefront of many lawmakers’ minds since the Obama administration came to power, lawyers who can ably navigate the nuances of these specialties have become increasingly valuable. U.S. News asked professors in these fields to rank schools on a specialty-by-specialty basis. Vermont Law School, Lewis & Clark College’s Northwestern School of Law, and Pace University Law School all earned top billing for environmental law. The St. Louis University School of Law, Boston University School of Law, and Maryland are this year’s highest ranked health law schools. Beyond environmental and health law, the surveyed faculty also ranked specialties including dispute resolution, international law, and tax law, among others.

Though the law school rankings have been in place for more than 20 years, this year U.S. News decided to get a new perspective on which law programs should be considered the nation’s elite. Hiring officials at firms that made the 2010 Best Law Firms rankings were asked to rate schools on a five point scale, and Harvard, with a 4.9 average reputation score, edged out both Stanford and Yale for the top spot, which tied for second with a 4.8 average.

The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania is one of many business schools reshaping their curriculum around a global model; medical schools nationwide are increasingly focused on primary care, given the nation’s imminent shortage of family physicians. Harvard Medical School, for instance, opened a $30 million center dedicated to primary care practice and instruction late last year. And with newly frugal law firms demanding first year hires who can actually practice rather than merely provide research and support as they acclimate to the legal world, Northwestern University Law School, for one, seeks students with substantial work experience and offers them the option of a degree in just two years.

It’s important for those considering graduate school to be mindful of the significant changes being made at graduate programs nationwide as they seek a school that best fits their needs and puts them in place to succeed with their diploma in hand. U.S. News’s 2012 rankings of Best Graduate Schools, released today, are a tool to help prospective grad students do just that.

The rankings highlight the top programs in business, law, medicine, education, and engineering, among numerous other specialties. Rankings for health programs like public health, veterinary medicine, and physician assistant, where Johns Hopkins University, Cornell University, and Duke University ranked first, respectively, were also updated.

Medicine: While the top spots in the rankings of medical schools remained constant, a pair of elite schools were knocked down several spots. Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, and Johns Hopkins maintained their respective rankings as the top three medical schools. Stanford jumped to fifth this year from 11th overall last year, and the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor fell from sixth to 10th.

With a shortage of primary care physicians causing alarm in the medical community, more students are being incentivized to follow that path by government loan repayment assistance and forgiveness programs for family and internal physicians. U.S. News ranks primary care programs in addition to the aforementioned research-centric rankings of medical schools. The University of Washington, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and Oregon Health and Science University maintained the top three spots in the primary care rankings.

Law: Yale University continued its long run atop the rankings of Best Law Schools, and the top five schools from the previous year’s rankings remained the same. The University of Texas—Austin made the jump from 15th to a tie for 14th with Georgetown University, cracking the so called “T-14″—the law programs that have remained in the top 14, in some order, since the advent of the U.S. News Best Law Schools rankings and are held in the highest esteem by many in the legal world. Conversely, Emory University tumbled to 30th after being ranked 22nd last year.

Engineering: The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is once again the top ranked engineering program, and the only change among the top 10 is the University of Texas—Austin sliding ahead of the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor to the eighth spot.

Education: Among education programs, Vanderbilt University claimed the top spot yet again. Johns Hopkins University fell from sixth place last year into a tie for 18th this year. The University of Texas—Austin, on the other hand, leapt from a tie for 10th last year to a tie for 2nd on this year’s list.
